Getting Air Horns to Work

I have just fitted an air horn kit to my SX, unfortunately as I did not listen to our physics teacher at school ( Jim will pay testament to that !!) I havent the faintest idea how to wire them up. They are an Italian set and all I am left with now is a relay. Would appreciate any help from members who have wired their horns up so I can blast Bristol with the rest of you. Cheers

I assume they are 12 volt type that operate off the battery?

You will need a 12 v battery in the system.

Chris It is 12 volt but I dont have a battery.Presume I will have to get a small 12volt Yuasa Battery.

yep- should've paid attention in Physics!!!!!

These air horns pull quite a large current- hence the need for the relay system.

I would imagine that those batteries are up to the job, but its best to get some feedback from someone who has actually done the job using a totally seperate battery. You will need to ensure that the seperate battery is independantly charged on a regular basis, as the scooter system will not be connected to it

He's just done a few jobs on the scoot and got it MOT'd and it rides like a dream now so will take it to him and sleep easy at night !

an easy fix is to wire the air horns direct to the new battery with a foot operated switch in line.

You need to ensure that:-

1) there is sufficient "power" in the battery to operate the horns
2) the foot operated switch can handle the amount of power required ( I used to use the old foot operated dip switches that were common in cars in the 1960's)- if the switch isn't up to it then the electrical contacts will burn out
3) the battery can be recharged.

I know on some 12 v electronic systems there is an additional take off point on the regulater so you can charge your battery automatically- don't know if your set up has this or not.

As you have an electronic system, then you need to be 100% sure in your wiring- one wrong connection and you may blow the system!

Seek professional help IMO
